Some FAQs by Applicants

  1. Do I need to be a New Milford High School student?
Right now, yes. We may open our application to other soon-to-be graduates in the future, but right now, we only accept applications from NMHS seniors.

  2. Do I need to be a resident of New Milford?
Yes, applicants must be from the greater New Milford area and eligible to attend New Milford High School.

  3. Do I need to have attended Pettibone school?
No! The Pettibone Scholarship and the Pettibone Community Center (formerly a school fondly remembered by us old folks) were named after the same man, John Pettibone, the former superintendent of New Milford Schools and an educator here for forty-two years. The scholarship and Community Center (former school) are separate entities.

  4. Are these scholarships only for four-year college degrees?
No! We award for college, trade school, and associate degree programs.

  5. How do you decide who gets a scholarship?
We decide based on financial need. And need exists in many ways. We urge everyone to apply.

  6. How does the interview work?
There are about 14 very lovely board members, including teachers, NMHS graduates, and local residents. We know it can feel intimidating to walk into a room full of that many adults, but I promise we’re excited to meet you and genuinely want to support your continued education. Interviews last only a few minutes each, which is why it’s important to complete your application as fully as possible and prepare to share your successes and goals.

Helping students achieve their educational goals of an advanced degree.

The John Pettibone Memorial Scholarship Fund upholds John Pettibone’s principle that all high school students be given the opportunity to pursue higher education by providing scholarships to those who might not otherwise have the means to obtain an advanced degree. The JPMSF Board of Trustees works to develop funds and awards over $60,000 in need-based scholarships each year. Our scholarships help eligible New Milford High School college, trade school, and associate degree-bound students achieve their educational goals.

$2,260,150 awarded in scholarships since 1949.

The John Pettibone Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. scholarship is only available online.

Online applications are password-protected. Passwords are available through the NMHS’s Career Center.

All graduating New Milford High School students eligible for college, an associate’s degree, or a trade school are encouraged to apply.

A Renowned Leader

The John Pettibone Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1949 as an honor to New Milford’s first Superintendent of Schools, John Pettibone. Between 1902 and 1944, John Pettibone led New Milford’s educational system with a vision, a mission, and a deep personal interest in the fullest development of the abilities of every student. During his tenure as a teacher, principal, and Superintendent of schools he demanded excellence from students and expected community support of all school initiatives. His educational leadership in New Milford is renowned.

JPMSF scholarships help eligible college and trade school-bound students achieve their goals.
